The killer within: Endogenous bacteria accelerate oyster mortality during sustained anoxia

چکیده

Sustained periods of anoxia, driven by eutrophication, threaten coastal marine systems and can lead to mass mortalities even resilient animals such as bivalves. While mortality rates under anoxia are well-studied, the specific mechanism(s) less clear. We used a suite complementary techniques (LT50, histology, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, valvometry) show that proliferation anaerobic bacteria within eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) accelerates rate anoxic conditions. Manipulative laboratory experiments revealed oyster survival conditions was halved when were present compared they excluded broad-spectrum antibiotic chloramphenicol. Histological assessments supported this mechanism showed infiltration in not treated with antibiotics general lack antibiotics. sequencing failed identify any particular genera responsible for mortality, rather diversity endogenous and/or sulfate-reducing common among oysters. In addition, monitoring valve gaping behavior field remarkable closure synchrony first exposed anoxia. However, periodically opened throughout anoxia/hypoxia both lab field, suggesting exogenous from environment may also influence natural settings. Coupled previous studies, we posit events wide range bivalves likely result co-morbidity asphyxiation bacterial processes.

Sustained Productivity Growth Will Accelerate the Convergence toward Advanced Economies

countries in the Region are to improve incomes and move rapidly toward convergence with the advanced market economies. The growing and vibrant private sector in many of these countries will drive productivity enhancements, but public policies should promote these enhancements. The barriers to and the sources of productivity growth are, of course, different in each country and will require a dif...

Erythrocyte: Bacteria killer and bacteria pray

Erythrocyte is human blood main bactericidal cell. During movement in blood stream erythrocytes are triboelectrically charged by rubbing to each other and vessel walls and this charge automatically attracts and keeps bacteria on erythrocyte surface. Bacteria fixation on erythrocyte membrane activates the receptors of the membrane and stimulates trans membrane releasing of oxygen from oxyhemoglo...

Endogenous Panophthalmitis : The Traitor Within !

Aim: To report a rare case of endogenous panophthalmitis in a diabetic with chronic kidney disease undergoing haemodialysis. Methods: A 54 year old male diabetic and hypertensive with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on maintenance haemodialysis through a tunnelled internal jugular vein (IJV) catheter with IJV catheter infection was being treated with parenteral Imipenam. He complained of sudden pa...

Natural killer T cells accelerate atherogenesis in mice.

We have investigated the potential role of CD1d-restricted natural killer T (NKT) cells in the development of atherosclerosis in mice. When fed an atherogenic diet (AD), NKT cell-deficient CD1d(-/-) mice had significantly smaller atherosclerotic lesions than AD-fed C57BL/6 (wild-type [WT]) mice. A significant reduction in atherosclerotic lesions was also demonstrated in AD-fed, low-density lipo...

Ischemic neurons recruit natural killer cells that accelerate brain infarction.

Brain ischemia and reperfusion activate the immune system. The abrupt development of brain ischemic lesions suggests that innate immune cells may shape the outcome of stroke. Natural killer (NK) cells are innate lymphocytes that can be swiftly mobilized during the earliest phases of immune responses, but their role during stroke remains unknown. Herein, we found that NK cells infiltrated the is...
